Sikkim today, September 29 hosted a grand Phoolpati procession as part of the Mahasaptami festivities of Dashain. Organised by the Mahasaptami Fulpati Shobha Yatra Committee, the event drew enthusiastic participation from all corners of the state, including members of its 21 recognised communities and various associations.
The event was graced by Minister Arun Upreti, Gangtok Legislator Delay Kaji Barfungpa, and Shyari MLA Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, who joined thousands of devotees and cultural performers in the colorful celebration. The procession featured sacred rituals, the rhythmic beats of the traditional Naumati Baja, dancers adorned in vibrant attire, and the ceremonial carrying of holy plants and offerings — a hallmark of the Phoolpati tradition.
Rooted in Nepali cultural heritage, Phoolpati is traditionally observed on the seventh day of the Dashain festival in Nepal, as well as in Nepali communities in Gangtok, Darjeeling, and beyond. The procession often includes ceremonial musket firing by soldiers, adding grandeur to the event.
Beyond its religious significance, this year’s celebration carried a deeper message — fostering unity among Sikkim’s diverse communities. The collective participation of all 21 communities and various associations reflected the spirit of harmony and cultural solidarity that the festival embodies.
Minister Arun Upreti expressed his appreciation for the cultural diversity of the state, saying the procession is “a living testament to Sikkim’s unity in diversity.”
