Union Minister Kiren Rijiju hailed Sikkim’s exceptional economic growth and environmental conservation at the India Today Conclave 2025, positioning it as a model for other states. Sharing the stage with Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, Rijiju underscored that the state boasts the highest per capita income in India, surpassing even Delhi, Chandigarh, and Goa.
Highlighting the Sikkim Model of Development, he praised the state’s effective governance, strategic investments, and sustainable policies under Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay). Rijiju commended Sikkim’s balanced approach to economic progress and environmental stewardship, noting that development does not have to come at the cost of nature.
“The Chief Minister has not only been a kind-hearted leader but also a progressive one, ensuring holistic development while preserving Sikkim’s rich natural heritage,” Rijiju stated. He encouraged other northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh to emulate Sikkim’s strategy of harnessing resources responsibly.
The discussion also shed light on Sikkim’s flagship programs, including Mero Rukh Mero Santati and Sishu Samriddhi Yojana, which received widespread applause for their focus on environmental sustainability and child welfare.
Emphasizing inter-state learning, Rijiju acknowledged that while Sikkim serves as a benchmark, it can also adopt best practices from other states to further enhance its growth trajectory.
His remarks reaffirmed Sikkim’s leadership in sustainable development, proving that economic prosperity and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. The camaraderie between Rijiju and Chief Minister Golay was evident, reflecting a shared vision for a progressive and self-sufficient Northeast.
