Sikkim's Naga village GLOF survivors still in shelters as rehabilitation begins: Mangan DC
Residents of Naga village in the Naga-Tung Gram Panchayat unit, who lost their homes in the glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) of October 3–4, 2023, are now undergoing rehabilitation with support from the district administration.
Mangan District Collector Anant Jain said that the administration has been following established procedures for families of those missing since the disaster.
“In any natural disaster, when bodies are not found after a certain period of time, families apply for death certificates, after which we issue them provisional certificates,” he explained.
Jain said that immediately after the landslide and flood impact in Naga village, officials moved affected families to temporary relief centres.

“According to official records, 100–110 people registered to stay there. Many are still there. The government has provided temporary shelters,” he added.
The October 2023 GLOF, triggered by the breach of South Lhonak Lake, caused extensive destruction across Mangan district, sweeping away homes, infrastructure, and leaving several residents missing.
The district administration has been coordinating rehabilitation measures and processing documents for the families affected by the tragedy.
