Sikkim's Nathu La Border trade to resume from August 1 after six-year Hiatus

Cross-border trade between India and China through the historic Nathu La pass in Sikkim will resume from August 1, ending a suspension of more than six years that began during the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

Sikkim Commerce and Industries Secretary Karma D. Youtso said the state has completed all necessary infrastructure repairs, administrative arrangements and security preparations despite harsh weather and damage caused by years of inactivity.

 

A trial run will be conducted on July 30 to test logistics, documentation and border-crossing procedures ahead of the reopening.

 

Officials said inspections found the Integrated Check Post (ICP) and the Sherathang Trade Mart in poor condition after prolonged closure and severe winter weather. Repair works were delayed due to extended snowfall but have now been completed.

 

Security has also been strengthened, with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) deploying additional personnel this season, including an exclusive women's platoon at Sherathang for the first time.

 

So far, around 38 traders have been issued trade passes, with more expected before operations begin. Authorities are also considering extending the deadline for issuing passes, subject to approvals from the Ministry of External Affairs and the State Intelligence Bureau.

 

Border trade will operate Monday to Thursday, with the gate opening at 7:30 am IST, and each registered trader will be allowed to conduct trade worth up to Rs 2 lakh per day. Officials confirmed that the existing list of approved import and export items and the standard operating procedures remain unchanged.
