Sikkim's top leaders join millions at Maha Kumbh Mela

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang led a delegation of Sikkim's highest-ranking officials to take ritual baths at the sacred Maha Kumbh Mela on February 9. The group included the Assembly Speaker, Deputy Speaker, cabinet ministers, and MLAs.

The 45-day religious gathering, which started January 13 at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers in Prayagraj, draws Hindu pilgrims seeking spiritual purification. According to Hindu tradition, the mythical Saraswati river also joins at this holy site.

Religious scholars estimate this year's festival could attract over 400 million visitors before concluding on February 26, making it one of humanity's largest peaceful gatherings. The ritual bathing is believed to wash away sins and break the cycle of rebirth.

For many devotees, the Kumbh Mela represents a once-in-a-lifetime spiritual journey. The festival rotates between four cities over a 12-year cycle, with the Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj considered especially auspicious.
