Sikkim's tourism sector has experienced unprecedented growth, with over 1.5 million domestic tourists visiting the northeastern Indian state in 2023, according to data from the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department. The first five months of 2024 have already recorded 450,000 visitors, suggesting another record-breaking year ahead.
Tourism numbers have nearly tripled over the past decade. In 2014, the state welcomed 560,000 domestic tourists, which surged to 1.37 million by 2017. Despite a significant downturn during the COVID-19 pandemic, recovery has been robust, with 2022 seeing a record 1.6 million domestic visitors.
Seasonal trends show May as the peak month for tourism, with 350,000 visitors in May 2023 alone. April and December are also popular periods, coinciding with summer and winter holiday seasons.
International tourism is gradually recovering, with 7,000 foreign tourists recorded in 2023. While this remains below pre-pandemic figures of 14,000, the upward trend indicates growing international interest in the Himalayan state.
The Sikkim government has invested in infrastructure improvements, including better roads, expanded accommodation options, and strategically placed tourist information centers. Adventure tourism activities such as trekking, river rafting, and paragliding have gained popularity, particularly among younger travelers.
Cultural heritage sites continue to attract visitors, with Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake, Yumthang Valley, Pelling, and Lachung remaining the most visited destinations. Local markets in Itanagar, Siliguri, and Gangtok have benefited from increased tourism, with handicrafts, woolen goods, and organic products seeing strong demand.
Government initiatives to ease travel restrictions and improve connectivity in remote areas aim to further boost international visitors. Tourism officials are expanding marketing efforts through trade shows and social media campaigns.
If current growth continues, 2025 could see record-breaking visitor numbers, further strengthening Sikkim's position as one of India's premier mountain tourism destinations.
