Assam’s Jiman Kachari sizzled in the early qualifying rounds of Microplex Global and Yonex Sunrise All-India Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament held on May 21.
Jiman, one of the players’ to watch out for from the Northeast did great to overcome a stiff challenge from local lad Madheshwar K. and won by score set of 15-9 13-15 15-8 to qualify for the next round.
Close to 1,000 youngsters from different parts of the country began the grind early in the morning and were still battling it out at the time of going to print. A number of players from the state, which has fielded the most number of entries in the Under-19 Boys and Girls Singles, are still in fray.
Earlier in the morning, the badminton tournament witnessed a grand inauguration in the presence of top luminaries from the state. Principal secretary Mr Dheeraj Kumar lit the ceremonial lamp while BAI Treasurer and TNBA president Dr Anbumani Ramdoss gave the welcome address, exhorting the youngsters to aim for the moon.
TNBA secretary Arunachalam gave the vote of thanks.
It may be mentioned that while the top Indian senior shuttlers are battling it out at the Sudirman Cup, the best of the next generation will be seen in action in the Chennai when the Microplex Global and Yonex Sunrise All-India Junior Rankplex Global and Yonex Sunrise All-India Junior Ranking badminton meet begins on Tuesday.
The meet also serves as a selection event for the Junior Asian Championship to be held in July.
Over 500 boys and 220 girls are going through the qualifying rounds in the hopes of making it to the main draw.
