Playing under lights of the 24,000-seater Arthur Ashe stadium in New York against Roger Federer would be a daunting task for many, but not for Sumit Nagal, the player ranked 190th in the world.
The 22-year-old Indian tennis ace stepped onto the grandest stage of them all, and instantly launched into a flurry of exquisite shotmaking against the Swiss great.
Prior to the match, Nagal had said, "I don't care what the commentators will be saying about me on TV. I'm going to be enjoying the crowd, playing the best tennis player ever. I'm just some dude from India. I'm fine with that until I make my name." And his confidence shone through in his tennis!
Nagal's fearless tennis helped him win the first set against the 'greatest of all time', Roger Federer by six games to four (6-4). The primetime crowd was left stunned! Could this young Indian upstart perhaps spring the greatest upset of the century? To his credit, however, Federer shrugged off the nerves and swept the next three sets.
"Almost is a cruel" word, however, this gutsy performance from the Indian tennis prospect bodes well for his future.
So who is this newcomer who almost took the tennis world by storm? Let's find out!
What many do not know about this youngster is that he is already is grandslam champion, having won the 2015 Wimbledon boys' doubles title with his Vietnamese partner Lý Hoàng Nam, defeating the pair of Reilly Opelka and Akira Santillan in the final. By doing so, he became the sixth Indian player to win a junior Grand Slam Title.
Born to Suresh Nagal and Krishna Devi Nagal, Sumit Nagal made his Davis Cup debut for India in the 2016 World Group Playoff tie against Spain in New Delhi.
He lived in Nangloi in West Delhi until he was 10. He completed his early studies at Little Angel School in Paschim Vihar of New Delhi. He was selected in the first batch of children as part of Mahesh Bhupathi's "Apollo Tyres Mission 2018 Programme".
