PM Modi Launches First-Ever Khelo India University Games in Odisha

Guwahati, February 22, 2020:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially launched the first-ever Khelo India University Games in Odisha on Saturday.

Modi joined the opening through video conference and said that it's a historic moment for Odisha. He urged the budding sportspersons of then country to aim for over 200 gold medals in the upcoming games.

He further said that with the setting up of the University, then Sports Andolan of the country has also gained momentum.

The launch event kicked off with a remarkable launch event at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Cuttack.

Precisely about 3400 athletes from 159 universities from across the country will come together to participate and battle it out in 17 disciplines, including rugby which is among the six-team events.

A number of athletes are looking ahead with its best foot forward at the Khelo India University Games to make a notable mark not only for their institutions and themselves but also to catch the eye of talent scouts.

The attempt and pivotal motive is to make the Khelo India University Games an inspirational competition for the youngsters of the country with the primary objective to help them find the balance between sport and education.

The sports discipline will be a total of 17 sporting events, which will include archery, athletics, boxing, fencing, judo, swimming, weightlifting, wrestling, badminton, basketball, football, hockey, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, rugby and kabaddi.
