New York, September 9, 2019:

World number two Rafael Nadal defeated world number five and first-time Grand Slam finalist Daniil Medvedev of Russia to win his fourth US Open title.

Rafael Nadal clinched the nearly five-hour hotly-contested final with a scoreline of 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4.

The 33-year-old Spaniard has now won 19 Grand Slam men's singles titles, just one fewer than Roger Federer's all-time record of 20 major titles. Earlier in the year, he had won the French Open, the only Grand Slam held on his favorite surface, clay, to take his tally to 18.

Rafael Nadal’s thrilling five-set win in the US Open was as impressive as his 2008 Wimbledon triumph against arch-rival Roger Federer, tennis legend Martina Navratilova said after the match at Flushing Meadows in New York.

Serbian superstar Novak Djokovic stands third on the all-time list with sixteen Grand Slam singles titles.
