Ace pugilist Shiva Thapa will contest in the 60 kg category in the second edition of the India Open Boxing Meet that is scheduled to be held from May 20 onwards at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in Guwahati city of Assam.
Apart from Thapa, five woman boxers from Assam will also participate in the meet. They are: Bhagyabati Kachari (75 kg), Lovlina Borgohain (69), Pwilao Basumatary (64 kg), Ankushita Boro (64 kg), and Jamuna Boro will also fight in the ring in 60 kg category of the women’s category.
Shiva Thapa has expressed hope that he is hopeful to grab the gold in the event. Winning the gold medal will not be difficult as he won bronze medal from the Asian Championships.
He further mentioned that his desire to win the gold is much higher and said he will be happier if it comes to him at his hometown in front of his own people. Thapa suffered a shocking loss in the semifinal stage in last year's edition of the tournament.
It is to be mentioned that Thapa became the first Indian to win a medal in four consecutive editions of the continental event. 200 pugilists from 16 boxing powerhouses will participate at the USD 70,000 prize money tournament.
