Gangtok: After marking its arrival on the BCCI’s Observation list as one of the most sincere and progressive State cricket Association of the country, the Sikkim Cricket Association has taken yet another historic step.
The Association has will now organize the state’s first-ever All Women’s Cricket Tournament which is now dubbed as the Khangchendzonga Shield, with its motto being -“With the Blessings of our Guardian Deity Sikkim’s Women Players shall Soar”.
Sikkim is also all set for an official visit by BCCI Chief Curator Ashish Bhowmick for handing over of the Ground, as well as a visit from certified level 4 England Cricket Board Master Coach & level 3 Cricket Australia & BCCI high-performance Coach, Dr. Atul Gaikwad for development of high-performance programs, camps and courses for coaches -- a first of its kind in the state.
Historically, Sikkim has never had a cricket tournament of this scale solely dedicated for women. This step therefore would serve as a platform for young women and girls to showcase their talent, as well as motivate and encourage more participation and interest in the sport for the future.
The SICA President Lobzang. G. Tenzing has from the very beginning emphasised the importance of promoting and encouraging women’s cricket in Sikkim.
The facilities provided to the players and support staff by Sikkim Cricket Association while organising Sikkim’s First Two-Tier Khangchendzonga Club Tournament (finals) and The First Khangchendzonga Shield are -- free accommodation and fooding facility, free Jerseys to all players of the Khangchendzonga Shield, trophy and medals for the Winners and Runners up and facilitation of top performers of the two tournaments.
