Laizon Football Academy wins historic inaugural Sadar Hills U-18 Cup in Manipur
Laizon Football Academy created history on Manipur 9 by becoming the first-ever champions of the Sadar Hills Under-18 Football Tournament after defeating Khulkon Football Club in a dramatic penalty shootout at Brig. M. Thomas Ground in Kangpokpi district.
The month-long tournament, organised by Sadar Hills Football Academy in collaboration with the Sadar Hills District Sports Association, marked the first-ever Under-18 football championship in the sporting history of Sadar Hills.
The final witnessed an intense contest between two emerging football teams from the region, with both sides displaying skill, determination and competitive spirit before a large crowd of spectators.
Laizon FA took the lead in the 12th minute after sustained pressure resulted in an own goal by Khulkon FC defender Thangkholet. The early breakthrough gave the Keithelmanbi-based side momentum as they continued to press forward with attacking intent.
Khulkon FC, however, staged a strong comeback in the second half and found the equaliser in the 73rd minute through Lenneithang, whose goal brought the match level at 1-1 and pushed the final into a penalty shootout.
Laizon goalkeeper Mangpilun Kipgen emerged as the hero of the match with three crucial saves during the shootout. Laizon converted three penalties, while Khulkon FC managed only one successful attempt, handing Laizon a 4-2 aggregate victory via tie-break.
With the win, Laizon FA lifted the inaugural championship trophy along with a cash prize of ₹30,000. Runners-up Khulkon FC received ₹15,000.
Several players were also recognised for their performances during the tournament. Khulkon FC’s Thangkholet Khongsai was named Best Defender, while teammate Letminsei Touthang finished as the tournament’s top scorer. Mangpilun Kipgen received the Best Goalkeeper award, and Lamgoumang Kipgen of Laizon FA was adjudged Player of the Tournament.
Organisers and local sports enthusiasts described the successful conduct of the inaugural championship as a major milestone for grassroots football development in Sadar Hills, saying the initiative would help nurture young sporting talent in the region for years to come.
