A strange life it was: Assam CM cherishes Lovlina Borgohain’s journey from a remote village of Assam to Tokyo Olympics

GUWAHATI: Right from the moment Olympic medal winner Lovlina Borgohain placed her foot in Guwahati on Thursday; the 23 year old has been showered with appreciations, respect and love from every nook and corner of the state. Assam Chief Minister Hiimanta Biswa Sarma, who himself was present at the Guwahati Airport to welcome her to the state said Lovlina gave what the state had been missing during the last 125 years.

“After a wait of 125 years, Lovlina has given us what we had missed during these years. Lovlina is saying that she will bring Gold during the next Olympics but let me tell you the relevance of Lovlina is not when she would get Gold in the next Olympics. The people of Assam will always remember her for making the state proud by clinching the first Olympic medal.”

Referring to those hard times that Borgohain faced during the course of preparation for the grand competition, Assam Chief Minister said, “What a strange life it was that started from Baromukhia village. She was dealing with mother’s kidney diseases, father’s economic struggles. She is from a remote village with every element of hardship in it. She conquered all these hurdles and slowly started tasting the fruit of success in many parts of the world. Now she has got an Olympic medal and made 3crore people of Assam so proud.”

The Chief Minister requested Lovlina to accept a post of Deputy Inspector in Assam Police.

In a formal occasion, organized to felicitate Lovlina in Srimanta Sankaradev Kalakshetra, Guwahati, the Chief Minister also cherished the sports journey of Assam started by Bhugeswar Baruah Talimaran Ao to Hima Das, Shiva Thapa, Dipankar Bhattacharjee ansd Jayanta Talukdar. He also thanked the trainers behind these sportspersons and sports organisers.

The 23-year-old pugilist was awarded Rs 1 crore by the state government along with an additional monthly stipend of Rs 1 lakh per month as a scholarship till the next Olympics. A boxing academy would also be set up at her native Sarupathar district for Rs 25 crore.

Notably, Assam government recently constructed a road leading to the house of Lovlina Borgohain after photos of the crater filled muddy road of Baromukhia village in Sarupather district started doing the rounds in social media following her rare feat in the Olympics.

Assam Government announced that a road in Guwahati will be named after Lovlina Borgohain.
