GUWAHATI: The Assam- Meghalaya border in Umlapher town of West Karbi-Anglong district on Wednesday remained tense for the second consecutive day after people from the border area in Ri-bhoi district came inside the Assam land and got into a heated argument with its Assam counterpart.
Ajagwaran Basumatary, Superintendent of Police of Hamren has said that with the intervention of local police, the situation has been brought under control.
Notably, Assam police vacated a check post located in Umlapher after the clash on Tuesday.
Talking to InsideNE, Basumatary said the police camp was a temporary one which was established to celebrate Independence Day on August 15.
“Some people came near the police post in an inebriated condition and engaged in an altercation with the local police which later led to a chaos. The post was inside the territory of Assam and it was a temporary one. We established the post to celebrate Independence Day and it was there for few days.”
On Wednesday, local from both side engaged into war of words. However Additional SP of Hamren, Bolin Deori and other local police officials held a talk with the local people and urged to maintain peace and harmony alongside the border.
