Assam Special DG GP Singh to investigate Nandita Saikia's murder, trial in fast-track court

The Assam government on Thursday has stated that it has given the responsibility of investigation into the heinous killing of Nandita Saikia to Special Director General of Police GP Singh.

GUWAHATI: The Assam government on Thursday has stated that it has given the responsibility of investigation into the heinous killing of Nandita Saikia to Special Director General of Police (Law & Order) GP Singh.

The decision was taken in a cabinet meeting held in Dispur.

 

Nandita Saikia, a student of Maridhal College of Dhemaji district was brutally attacked by one Rintu Sharma for allegedly rejecting his ‘love’. Saikia later succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday.

 

Her spine–chilling death sparked massive protest in the state with student bodies, political organizations, civil society, and women rights groups raising questions of the safety of women in the state.

 

The protesters have been demanding capital punishment for the miscreant.

 

Right after meeting on Thursday, cabinet minister Ranoj Pegu announced the decision.

 

“Investigation into the killing of Nandita Saikia will be carried on by Special DGP GP Singh. Moreover the trial of the case will be held in a Fast Track court.”Pegu said.

 

The All Assam Students Union, a prominent student body of the state took out a protest rally in Dhemaji district protesting the heinous crime and demanded capital punishment for the killer.
