KANCHANPUR: Nagesh Kumar B, the District Magistrate of Tripura's North district that is currently rocked by protests over the settlement of Bru refugees originally from Mizoram, today informed that a 46-year-old man has been killed in police firing. The Tripura Government has, meanwhile, announced Rs 5 lakh ex gratia to the family of the deceased.

"The blockade of National Highway 8 was organized by the Joint Movement Committee today Chamtila, Panisagar Sub-Division. In anticipation of the same, prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPc to prevent unlawful assembly had been imposed by the SDM, Panisagar," the DM said in his briefing today, adding, "The Police deployed at Dolubari tried to stop the agitators from proceeding to Chamtila, where blockade was planned. However, on account of too many people, Police could not prevent them from proceeding to Chamtila."

The DM then went on to add that the police had to resort to use lathi charge and teargas to prevent them, but could not.

As the crowd proceeded towards Chamtilla from dolu bari, at Agnipasa few miscreants have attacked the SDPO & his PG and in defense, police had to open fire leading to unfortunate death a person named Srikanta Das, aged 46, the DM said.

The SDPO, Panisagar and his PG have been seriously injured during the attack.

During the crowd control 23 people have been injured out of which 7 are civilians and about 15 are from Police and Fire Service, the DM said.

The injured persons have been shifted to Sub-Divisional Hospital, Panisagar and 8 people were referred to District Hospital.

Meanwhile, the Tripura Government has decided to provide ex-gratia compensation of 5 lakh to the family of the deceased and to provide free medical treatment to all the injured.

A magisterial enquiry headed by the District Magistrate & collector shall be done on the incident of firing.

"Moreover, to prevent any further untoward incident orders under section 144 of Cr. P.0 to prevent unlawful assembly of 4 or more persons has also been imposed in both Kanchanpur and Dharmanagar Sub-Division. 8. Requisition has been placed to armed forces to maintain law & order in the district," the DM added.
