Stated to be the world’s deepest, the strategic highway through the Brahmaputra Canyon near the Arunachal Pradesh border has been completed by China. The completion comes ahead of its plan to build a mega-dam over the gorge.

The construction of the highway passing through Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon costed around USD 310 million. The maximum depth of canyon is 6009 metres. In Tibet, the mighty Brahmaputra is popularly known as Yarlung Zangbo.

Started in 2014, the highway project began with an estimated investment of more than 2 billion Yuan.

The completion of the major construction was marked by digging a 2114 metre tunnel on Saturday morning. The 67.22 km road connects Pand Township in Nyingchi and Medog Country which is the last county in Tibet located near Arunachal Pradesh border.

Built on the former hiking route between Nyingchi's Pad Township and Baibung Township, Medog County, the new highway has an altitude difference of upto 2892 metres between lowest and the highest road spots.

Once the new becomes functional, the distance between Nyingchi and Medog County will be shortened to 180 kms from 346 kms, cutting travel time by eight hours.
