Agartala: Former Tripura Chief Minister and CPIM Politburo member Manik Sarkar on Sunday claimed that Lord Ram would have hanged himself if he were still alive and witnessed as to how his name was being used by his 'self-styled followers'.

Sarkar made the remarks refering to a recent incident at Kailashahar under Unakoti district where a DYFI activist was thrashed allegedly by the ruling party hooligans and later forced to chant 'Jai Shri Ram' in a heavily circulated video.

The DYFI supporter was seen in tattered clothes, donning a party cap shouting the Jai Sri Ram slogans in face of the threats coming from behind the screens.

While interacting with media after his visit to a blood donation camp organized by the youth wing of the CPIM party, Sarkar told the reporters that the ruling party’s youth wing was resorting to violent activities instead of competing in terms of social programmes.

“The students and youth leaders of Left parties have acceptance in all the spheres of the society. Their social commitments that have time and again been established through programmes like blood donation camp, mask distribution, sanitization etc. works undertaken across the state. On the other hand, the ruling party youth wing has failed miserably in competition with them in terms of social responsibility. This is why, they are furious and at the same time jealous of the Left minded youth”, he explained.

Sarkar further smelt the backing of the BJP leaders behind the attacks.

“Those who are involved in the attacks belong to the same age group. Highly frustrated by gradually decreasing public support and under the incitement of senior leaders, the youth supporters are carrying out all these activities”, the former Chief Minister said.

He also lamented that no senior leader from the BJP including the chief of the government has condemned any of such incidents.

“These are all indications of weakness”, Sarkar pointed out.
