GUWAHATI: Meghalaya Assembly speaker Metbah Lyngdoh has been unanimously elected as president of North East Regional Institute of Parliamentary Studies, Training and Research (NERIPSTR) situated at Khanapara near Guwahati.

He was elected at a joint meeting of the executive committee, Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, India Region, Zone III, which covers all eight north eastern states, here on Tuesday.

The meeting was attended by speakers, deputy speakers, Assembly commissioners and secretaries of all the states in the Northeast.

Due to Shillong’s proximity with the institute at Jawahar Nagar in Khanapara, outgoing chairman of North East Region Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and Assam Assembly speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami suggested that NERIPSTR be under the administrative care of Assam and Meghalaya on rotation basis.

Lyngdoh later told the media that he would oversee the functioning of the training institute and ensure that parliamentary studies training is imparted to north eastern states’ legislators and Assembly employees at the earliest.

The North East Region Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (NERCPA), India region, Zone III was initiated by the then Lok Sabha speaker PA Sangma in 1996.

He said he would convene a meeting of the executive council of the NERIPSTR after the Assam Assembly elections. Goswami also handed over the chairmanship of NERCAP to Arunachal Pradesh speaker Pasang Dorjee Sona in the same meeting.
