Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday, August 1 congratulated Tripura judoka Asmita Dey for creating history by winning India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in judo, describing her achievement as a matter of immense pride for the state.

Speaking to the media, Chief Minister Saha said he received the news while returning to Agartala from South Tripura yesterday.

"I have known Asmita Dey for a long time. I had also felicitated her earlier. Her achievement has brought glory not only to Tripura but to the entire country,” he said.

The Chief Minister said that Asmita, a girl from Belonia in South Tripura district, has become an inspiration for the youth of the state.

“The way she has worked hard and achieved this success will encourage many young people to take up sports and make a name for themselves, just like Dipa Karmakar inspired generations of athletes,” he added.

Terming Asmita’s gold medal victory a “proud moment” for Tripura, Dr. Saha said, “On behalf of the government and the people of Tripura, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to her. Tripura has immense sporting talent, and I have always mentioned this in various programmes.”

The Chief Minister also said that Asmita’s association with the Uttar Pradesh Police would provide her with greater exposure and opportunities to further her sporting career. However, he added that the state government would welcome her if she wished to contribute to Tripura.

“Asmita is a pride of Tripura. If she wants to return and serve the state, we can certainly think about possibilities for her,” the Chief Minister said.
