Agartala, January 11, 2020:

Amid nationwide protests against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, a Bangladeshi national who has been identified as Minati Das, a resident of Jiwanganj Bazar under Brahmanbaria district, has been arrested at Khowai of Tripura Thursday, police said.

According to official reports, Das had been arrested along with 3 Indian citizens -- her brother Sailen Das, sister-in-law Sonati Das, and an accomplice Atindra Debnath, from Teliamura.

According to police, Das' relatives had brought her to the state for better treatment. Minati (60) was reportedly suffering from old-age related ailments for the last few years. Her relatives—Sailen and family went on a visit to her place and took her along for treatment in Tripura.

On their way back, they had been detained by on-duty BSF guards and were handed over to the state police. Speaking to this reporter, OC of Champahaur police station, Udhyam Debbarma, confirmed the incident, but denied to disclose anything further.

Sources in the BSF have informed us that instances of Bangladeshi nationals crossing over to the Indian side with the help of relatives .

Last year, BSF people apprehended a total 134 outsiders found to be crossing the borders illegally. Bangaldeshi nationals alone accounted for 92 of the arrests, while 41 Rohingyas and 1 Nigerian were also arrested, according to official reports.
