Agartala, April 9, 2019:

The setbacks for the BJP party in the North-East keep on coming. In the latest dent to the saffron party’s hopes in the region, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) party’s youth brigade joined the Congress party ahead of polls in the state.

After the release of the BJP’s manifesto titled ‘Sankalpa Patra’, IPFT members have started leaving the party due to its alliance with the saffron party. IPFT Youth General Secretary Sukla Charan Noatia too has defected to the Congress party ahead of the polls due to his opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. “I have quit IPFT since the party has declined to speak up against Citizenship Amendment Bill. If passed, the Bill will damage tribal interests across the country. Congress is directly opposing the legislation. So, we have joined the party,” Shuklacharan said.

Sukla arrived at the decision to leave the party after attending a meeting with Congress President from Tripura, royal scion Pradyot Debburman, late at night on Monday.

He was earlier chosen as the IPFT candidate from Tripura West Constituency, but his nomination was rejected by the Returning Officer.

This will come as a big shock for the IPFT and also allies BJP IPFT’s Ananta Debburma had also quit the indigenous party and joined the Congress earlier on Monday.

It can safely be assumed that with many of its former allies joining the Congress, it is now a do-or-die situation for the party in Tripura.
