AGARTALA: Demonstrators protesting against the rehabilitation of Bru refugees from Mizoram have blocked the national highway in Dolubari village of North Tripura district. The Bru resettlement has drawn resentment from several quarters in Tripura -- especially from the Bengali and Mizo bodies.

According to reports, there has been vandalism and setting of cars on fire in the area, as tension has gripped the area.
Meanwhile, heavy security has been deployed at the spot, and tear gas shells have been fired by authorities to bring the situation under control.
Protests have broken out across Tripura over the resettlement of 35,000 plus Reang refugees who originally hail from Mizoram and fled during communal riots.
According to reports, the agitation against the resettlement of Brus is being led by Joint Movement Committee (a joint body of Bengalis) and the Mizo convention.

Meanwhile, opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), has said the resettlement process of Bru migrants in Tripura should be ensured without hurting the interests of the local residents.
It has urged the government to initiate a dialogue with the protesters demanding the resettlement of the refugees across the state rather than one subdivision.
