Tripura: Political parties gear up ahead of ensuing ADC election

As the polls to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) have been deferred by six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all the political parties seemingly intensified political activities across the state. The palpable political vacuum in the ADC areas has brightened up chances for almost all the political parties to chalk out new strategies to hold control over the scenario.

Amidst all this, new realignment concepts are coming into fore as people are being seen in skipping one option from another. The spree had become clearer in the areas located in remote sub-divisions of the state where every day, political leaders were found camping for votes ahead of the polls.

The BJP, the IPFT, the Congress, even including CPIM, left no stone unturned to churn out the best possible results in the ensuing polls. For the ruling BJP, MP Rebati Kumar Tripura, being the president of Tripura Pradesh Janajati Morcha took the front seat in campaigns.

After returning from Delhi, Rebati had actively partaken in public outreach programmes. He had visited many parts of his constituencies and also welcomed newcomers in the saffron fold. Rebati, who had once invited serious criticism from his “Dafa (community)” for being muted conspicuously on the issue of CAA(Citizenship Amendment Bill), apparently stole the attention this time for his increasing public presence.

On the other hand, other parties were also doing their part to stand out loud. In a related development, the Kalyanpur MLA Pinaki Das Chowdhury welcomed 50 families in the saffron camp from different parties on Sunday. According to reports, most of the newcomers crossed over from IPFT. The attempt, local sources, described as a sheer attempt to make the junior ally weaker ahead of the polls. Similarly, in Udaipur 27 families joined BJP from CPIM. On the contrary, In Gandacherra, IPFT leaders welcomed 20 voters from the BJP and CPIM to their party. In Karamcherra, 41 voters joined Congress.

The oldest indigenous party INPT, which was still to make any mark ahead of the polls, was also making attempts to come out. The INPT after it’s a big merger of Animesh Debbarma led NCT had convened it’s Central Working Committee meeting today. Party General Secretary Jagadish Debbarma said, they will soon launch their activities in the hills.

Last but not the least, the Tripura Upajati Ganamukti Parishad—CPIM’s tribal wing which had just completed its tenure in the ADC, was still seized into press conferences and city based movement activities. No big attempt had been taken from the party leaders to reinstate the political connection until today after they were ousted from power in 2018. GMP chief and former MP Jitendra Chowdhury kept on pointing fingers at the state government but attempts were less if compared to the action to steal the show.
