Tripura: 17 migrant workers forced to walk on foot towards home

A group of migrant workers from the capital city of Agartala made to start a journey on foot towards their homeland after getting no response from the part of District Administration West Tripura district despite repeated attempts. The group that consisted of 17 migrant workers also include a woman, all of them were engaged in construction works here in the Agartala city.

As soon as the incident came into notice, the civil administration swung into action and offered them sheltered at a community hall in Teliamura after the distresses laborers completed a journey of 45 kilometers on foot. Reportedly, the Congress workers of Telimaura first raised the alarm by giving them food and other relief materials while they were heading towards their homeland taking the railway route.

“The Congress workers, when spotted them, extended help and provided dry food packets and other necessary essentials. This particular incident had pinpointed the incompetence of the government in resolving the plight of migrant workers” alleged TPCC president Pijush Biswas.

According to a highly placed source in Teliamura sub-divisional administration said, among the 17 migrants, 15 hail from Murshidabad and the rest of the others are from Bihar. The administration has already taken the necessary initiatives to give them shelter and food.

“Food packets and other necessary reliefs have been given to them. According to the migrant workers, they stopped in Teliamura after completing a 45 kilometers long journey to rest. On being asked, they said that they have approached the District Magistrate West Tripura in written to help them but get no positive response in return. After a wait of some time, they decide to begin their journey on foot”, said the source in the condition of anonymity.

The source also said that now the administration had started contacting the relevant people in order to send them back to their homes.”They are now in a makeshift shelter in a Netajinagar community hall. The process of sending them back home has been initiated and shortly fruitful answers results will come”, said the source.
