Tripura: Bengali Body Lodges FIR against Pradyot Manikya for Alleged 'Anti-Bengali Remarks'

Nagarik Surakhsha Manch, a organization of the Bengali community, lodged an FIR at the Kanchanpur Police station in Tripura against Pradyot Kishore Debbarma of the erstwhile Manikya dynasty for allegedly fueling communal tension.

Speaking over phone to Inside Northeast, leader of the Manch, Diptanu Debnath said, “Pradyot Kishore, recently, made several statements against the Bengali community."

He pointed out that Pradyot Kishore Debbarman had recently alleged that Assamese people had become minority because of Bengalis, claiming that he had indirectly made such a reference in the context of Tripura also.

"Such statements not only puts the Bengali community in a poor light, but is also potentially dangerous for communal harmony and unity", Debnath adding, "It is the duty of the Government to identify as to who had infiltrated in Assam or for that matter, in Tripura. Identifying whole Bengali community as Bangladeshi is not acceptable, hence, we lodged an FIR against Pradyot Kishore Debbarman", Debnath said.

Debnath also pointed out that people of Kanchanpur – both the indigenous people and Bengali people – always lived in peace, even during ethnic violence in 1980s there was no incident in the areas.

“Even at present, there is no enmity between different communities living in Kanchanpur – but, outsiders are creating trouble and fomenting communal sentiments. Our fight is against the outsiders, we have no qualms against any community, political party or administration”, Debnath added.

Commenting on Bengali people languishing at relief camps in Anandabazar, Diptanu Debnath said, local administration is trying to co-operate, however, there is discontent among the relief camp inmates relating to compensation provided by the administration to violence affected Bengali people.

“Since new SDM took charge, we informed him that we would wait for some time and resume our agitation from February 21 if our demands remain unfulfilled”. He, however, exuded confidence that local administration would address the demands of the Manch.

During the meeting with the SDM, Manch leaders pitched for arranging medical treatment facilities along with adequate medicines for relief camp inmates. Manch leaders also demanded security to affected Bengali people and adequate compensation so that affected Bengali people can rebuild their dwellings and shops which were reportedly ransacked by miscreants the during anti-CAB agitation.
