A chargesheet has been filed against five Public Work Department (PWD) officers of the former Left front government in Tripura over irregularities in the construction of the 2.5 kms long flyover in the State. This step was taken by the investigating officer of the Crimes Branch of Tripura Police.
The chargesheet has also been filed against the officers including the-then Chief Engineer (PWD) Sunil Bhowmik, over the construction of steel arc bridge over Katakhal instead of RCC bridge resulting an extra expenditure for an amount of Rs. 19 crore.
A press communiqué of SP, Tripura Crime Branch stated, "The concerned engineers of the then PWD department has approved faulty Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the flyover which perhaps has gone wrongful loss to government exchequer amounting to Rs. 26,25, 37,589 as deviation amount."
"Of the 5 officers named in the chargesheet, the then Additional Chief Engineer, Planning Circle (PWD) Alak Ranjan Roy Chowdhury is arrested and forwarded to lower division court with the chargesheet. He has been remanded to Judicial Custody till October 11", the communique added. However, the chargesheet is filed with the West Agartala Police Station.
It may be mentioned here that the Agartala flyover is a flyover under construction in the Indian state of Tripura. The flyover, the first in the state, will be 2.26 km long, stretching from the police line (Drop Gate) in southern Agartala to Fire Brigade chowmuhuni (square) in the heart of the city. The Construction is carried out by NCC and it is likely to open in 2020. The estimated cost of the project is around Rupees 250 crore (Rs. 2.5 billion).
