Agartala, February 5, 2020:

Reiterating its demand for the extension of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) regime to Tripura, the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra (INPT) has stated that it is imperative for the Government to fulfill the demand so that the tribals can be safeguarded.

Speaking to Inside Northeast, the INPT's General Secretary Jagadish Debbarma has stated that there is rising tension in the tribal areas of Tripura as the indigenous tribals have been reduced to a minority. "The ILP has become the need of the hour because the indigenous peoples, the tiprasa were the majority once, but now, our numbers have dwindled and we have been reduced to a microscopic minority."

The INPT leader further believes that the creation of an autonomous council 1984 has done little to preserve the majority status of the tribals. "We want ILP in the ADC to protect our majority and the ratio should be in favour of our people. As of now, the percentage of tribals in the area is 84%, others are 16%. Not only in ADC area, now we are asking for ILP across Tripura."

"They (the BJP-IPFT ruling coalition) are only giving assurance to every demands, but they are yet to fulfill our demands", says Debbarma, appealing the ruling dispensation to pay heed to the indigenous peoples' demand.
