The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) on June 30th, 2020, demanded the government to beef up police vigil in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) areas ahead of the ensuing elections of the council.
The junior ally in the BJP-IPFT alliance government pointed out that due to the remoteness of some of the villages, it became, sometimes, impossible to act swiftly. Had the village police and town police were deployed, the situation could have been changed.
The party placed a demand draft before the ADC administrator to look into the matter on Tuesday.

“At present there are as many as 587 numbers village committees covering the entire District Council areas and village committee administration are look after by elected village committees while to oversee the law and order of the entire state of Tripura including Sixth schedule Areas are vested with the Home department of the State Government of Tripura and having police station; police out post etc, covering whole of the District Council areas. But the fact remains that due to remoteness and communication problems it is not always possible for such P.S/out Post for strict vigilance of the remote village areas under their respective jurisdiction”, the demand draft reads.
In its letter, the party also cited the sixth schedule and highlighted its demands. “The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) constituted through 49th Amendment of the Constitution of India and extension of Provision- of Sixth Schedule with effect from April 1985 itself
The District Council empowered for recruitment of Village Police and Town Police for rendering assistance relating to law and order in the village/town level in the Sixth Schedule areas.
The party demanded recruitment of minimum 1200 village or town police personnel for 2 people each for every village committee. The total number of village committees now stood at 587.
