AGARTALA: One UK returned person has been tested positive for Covid-19 in Tripura and his samples are being tested for the new mutant coronavirus strain. This was confirmed by Siddhartha Shiv Jaisawal, mission director of the Tripura National Health Mission (NHM).

Jaiswal informed that samples of the person testing positive were sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune on Friday to detect if the new mutant strain of Covid-19 was present in his body.

It may take two days for the confirmatory results to arrive.

Meanwhile, health officials till Friday evening identified 40 people who have come into the contact with the person testing Covid-19 positive.

The mission director also said that health workers have also collected samples of another person from West Tripura district, who had returned from the UK recently.

“We have collected the samples of a man in West Tripura district, who returned from the UK about two weeks ago and his test results are awaited,” said an official of the state health department on condition of anonymity.

“The man and his family have been kept at home in isolation,” he said.

Any passenger passing through the UK will have to undergo the rapid-antigen test and will have to remain in institutional quarantine or home isolation for seven days if they test positive for Covid-19.

Nine more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Tripura on Friday, pushing the tally to 33,225, a Health Department official said.

The death toll remained at 381, he said.

Tripura at present has 187 active cases, while 32,634 people have recovered and 23 patients migrated to other states, the official said.

Sixty-eight patients were discharged from GB Pant Hospital on Thursday.

A total of 5,72,192 samples have been tested for COVID-19 in the state so far.
