Tripura: Police fire tear gas shells, lathi-charge to disperse teachers protesting near CM's residence

AGARTALA: As the protest intensified in Agartala, Tripura police on Wednesday resorted to lathi-charge, firing of tear gas shells and water cannons on protesting terminated teachers.

Sources reported that the clash between the police and agitating teachers has been reported from outside the Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb’s residence in the capital city.

Carrying the Tricolour, the protestors are braving the water cannons and tear gas shells fired by the personnel of Tripura Police in its bid to disperse the agitating crowd.

Hundreds of agitating terminated teachers have gheraoed the Chief Minister’s residence.

Earlier on Wednesday morning, a massive force of police and paramilitary personnel had vacated the location at Paradise Chowmuhani in Agartala, where the protestors had been demonstrating for the past 52 days.

Over 160 agitating teachers were also arrested by the police earlier in the day.

Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) has been imposed in the Agartala Municipal Corporation area due to the ongoing protests by a group of terminated teachers.

According to the order released on Tuesday by the District Magistrate and Collector, Section 144 CrPC will remain in force for a period of 24 hours with effect from 6 am today.

There was a likelihood of violent activities and apprehension of danger to human life and public property, in the view of which this order has been passed ex-parte addressed to the public in general and agitators of Joint Movement Committee of 10323 in particular.

Earlier on Monday, the agitating staged a protest in front of the education directorate in Tripura’s capital Agartala with the mortal remains a deceased teacher who passed away after he allegedly suffered a massive stroke on Monday.

The deceased teacher was identified as Ajit Sutradhar, a resident of Noaniyamura in West Tripura.
