Tripura: Pradyot Manikya to Move Supreme Court Challenging High Court Rule Imposing Ban on Animal Sacrifice

Former Tripura Congress President Pradyot Manikya has lashed out against the Tripura High Court's order banning the ritualistic sacrifice of animals and birds at the temples in the State.

In a video posted on his official Facebook account, the royal scion said that he had often advocated for the banning of animal slaughter with his deceased father, being an animal lover himself. "However, this should be done by holding discussions with various stakeholders of society", he said, adding that the High Court cannot take any decisions regarding "religion, culture, and heritage."

Manikya further stated that it is not the High Court's role to interpret religious rites and rituals. He further added that the solution to this "problem" should be reached after "internal" discussions.

Thus, keeping these things in mind, Manikya has resolved to challenge the High Court's decision at the apex Court of the country, the Supreme Court.

Manikya further contended that this ruling is against the indigenous tribal people's wishes and is also against the age-old Hindu scriptures. "The ruling should have been instead about performing the sacrifice in a humane manner, but that was not the case", he lamented.

It may be mentioned here that tha Tripura High Court had, on Friday, banned the sacrifice of animals and festivals for ‘religious reasons’ in the State’s temples. This order comes merely days before the upcoming Durga Puja, to be held in October.

A division bench of Chief Justice Sanjoy Karol and Justice Arindam Lodh pronounced the order after hearing public interest litigation.
