The miscreants in Tripura damaged a statue of Baidynath Majumdar who served the state as Deputy Chief Minister from 1993-98 and the CPI-M as its secretary from 1998-2008.
According to official sources, the attack on the statue was carried out at Kailasahar on Wednesday night.
The CPI-M condemned the incident and demanded action against those involved in the incident.
“We can see the hand of BJP in the incident. After they grabbed power, a number of statues of Left leaders and Communist ideologues were destroyed. The latest incident has hurt people including grassroots workers of the BJP. We demand that people, who were involved, are immediately identified and arrested and action taken against them as per the law,” CPI-M state secretary Bijan Dhar told InsideNe.
He criticised the state’s BJP government for its failure to rein in such acts of the miscreants.
The BJP denied its involvement in the incident. BJP spokesman Mrinal Kanti Deb said: “We are equally hurt by the incident and this was evident from our taking out a rally condemning the incident. We demand stringent action against the perpetrators of the crime”.
