Tripura: Two BSF jawans succumb to COVID-19, state death toll at 40

Two Border Security Forces (BSF) jawans of Tripura frontier have succumbed to coronavirus disease taking the total death toll in the state at 40.

The first death was of a 52-year-old who was posted under 133 Battalion in Nalkata under North District of the state and the second jawan, a 51-year old was posted 80battalion of BSF in Teliamura under Khowai district of Tripura.

“The 52-year-old jawan was tested positive of the deadly virus on August 01 and soon he was referred to state-run Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala, Tripura. The deceased had returned from leave on May 30 and was placed under quarantine in the battalion headquarters in Nalkata of North District”, a health officials in a condition of anonymity told InsideNE.

The second death was of a 51-year-old who was posted in 80battalion of BSF in Teliamura under Khowai district of Tripura was feeling ill today morning and the patient was taken at a private hospital in Agartala where his sample was tested through a rapid antigen test kit and result came positive.

When he was tested positive and the jawan was shifted at GB Pant hospital where he succumbed to the virus.

According to sources around 700 BSF jawans had tested positive for COVID-19 in Tripura.

Speaking with InsideNE, BSF Public Relations Officer of Tripura frontier said this is very unfortunate that two of our officials have succumbed to the virus. They have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. They were posted at the border.

“One among the two jawans was suffering from co-morbidity conditions including kidney problem, while the other was a nursing assistant. They might have got exposed while attending their duties. They have lost their lives at GBP hospital”, PRO said.

He also said that the BSF is checking upon the state guidelines and standard operating protocol (SOP), which will follow that accordingly.

He also said that except these two deaths, most of the jawans have recovered from the virus, while some are under the state of recovery.
