The Biplab Kumar Deb-led Tripura administration is trying to prevent people from holding a “victory rally”. After the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 died a ‘natural death’ at the Indian Parliament, people who opposed the Bill have been celebrating in all corners of the Northeast, but the Movement against Citizenship Amendment Bill’s (MACAB) intention to hold a rally at Swami Vivekananda Ground in Agartala ran into hurdles.
The application to hold the rally on 18 February from 11 am onwards was turned down by authorities citing an “apprehension of breach of peace”. The authorities have further stated that a Health and Fitness, Beauty and Fashion Expo is being organized from 15 February to 3 March.
The BJP-led Tripura Government has often found itself in the centre of controversies due to statements made by their leader Biplab Kumar Deb. Deb, who is known for his hardcore ‘Hindutvabadi’ stance regarding politics and life, in general, has been known for making baffling statements. Deb’s solution for unemployment? Cow milking and opening up a paan-selling establishment! His message to people who point fingers at his administration? Chop off their nails!
This latest incident of the Tripura Government’s refusal to let people hold peaceful and democratic rallies in the state shows the Government’s intolerance towards people with an opposing viewpoint.
