Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, allegedly, said that if the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was implemented in his state, he would lose his CM’s post.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, Biplab Kumar Deb is seen saying that his father and relatives had come from Bangladesh and he would be among those affected if the NRC is implemented in Tripura.

It may be mentioned here that the video clip that has surfaced on the internet, is said to be an extract of a press meet in West Bengal’s North Dinajpur district. He is seen saying, “If I implement it in my state…My relatives, my father came from Bangladesh. He has got his citizenship card…After that, I was born in Tripura. So, if anyone suffers a loss due to NRC, I shall lose my Chief Ministership first. Am I a fool that I shall implement NRC to lose CM-ship?”
The Tripura Chief Minister has landed in the soup after the video went viral. However, Deb’s Media Advisor Sanjay Mishra, reportedly, said that the video clip was “taken out of context for dirty politics” by some in order to confuse people.
The full video clip shows Deb saying that the NRC and Citizenship Amendment Bill were meant to protect genuine citizens from “illegal immigrants, foreign infiltrators, thieves, and dacoits”. He was also seen slamming West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee for opposing NRC and CAB. He said that one should understand about NRC and CAB before speaking about them. He went on to say that Banerjee does not study and talk about things. “She speaks on impulse,” he alleged.
