BSF detains five, including Bangladeshi national, for illegal border crossing in Tripura

The Border Security Force (BSF) detained five persons, including a Bangladeshi national on January 20, from the Batadola border area under Sonamura subdivision of Sepahijala district in Tripura for allegedly attempting to cross the international border illegally, police said.

The detained Bangladeshi national has been identified as Dhananjay Dhar (59), a resident of Chakuria Upazila in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district. The remaining four are suspected touts, including one resident of Tripura and three from West Bengal.

According to police, the others have been identified as Robin Mia (22) of Sonamura in Tripura, and Tapan Kumar Ghosh (56) of MC Garden Road, Purba Sinthee, South Dumdum; Saikat Chowdhury (55); and Ajit Kumar Das (35), all residents of North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

Officer-in-Charge of Sonamura Police Station, Tapas Das, said the BSF apprehended the group while they were attempting to cross the border illegally from the Batadola area.

A case has been registered at Sonamura Police Station under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, along with relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

All five accused were produced before a local court on January 21 for further legal proceedings, police added.
