“He should receive the harshest punishment”: Tripura minister on Gurugram assault case
Tripura Minister Tinku Roy on February 27 said he met the Tripura girl who was assaulted in Gurugram and assured her family of all possible assistance from the state government. The survivor is currently undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi.
“I went to Safdarjung Hospital and met the girl. I spoke with the Haryana Chief Minister, police officers, the doctor treating her and her parents. The culprit has been arrested and should receive the harshest punishment,” Roy said, adding that Manik Saha has directed that every possible help be extended to the survivor and her family.
The minister’s remarks came days after shocking details of the assault surfaced. Police disclosed on February 22 that the 19-year-old woman was subjected to extreme cruelty by her live-in partner, who allegedly burned her private parts using sanitiser and filmed her nude. The woman had been hospitalised in a critical condition following the prolonged assault.
Gurugram police arrested the accused, identified as 19-year-old Shivam from Narela, on February 19.
The arrest followed a complaint from the victim’s mother, a serving police officer in Tripura, who alerted authorities after receiving a distress call from her daughter on February 16 at around 10 pm. According to police, the woman told her mother over the phone, “I don’t have time, I will be killed… Shivam has been beating me and burning me for the last three days. He will kill me today.”
Following the alert, Haryana Police acted swiftly to locate the woman and take her to the hospital, where doctors confirmed the severity of her injuries. Officials said the accused has been taken into custody and the case is being investigated under stringent provisions of the law.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with the Tripura government maintaining close coordination with Haryana authorities to ensure the survivor receives proper medical care, legal support and protection, while pressing for exemplary punishment for the accused.
