Major drug bust at Agartala railway station: Cough syrup worth Rs 80 lakh seized

In a major crackdown on the illegal transportation of contraband substances, Tripura Police, in coordination with the Government Railway Police (GRPS) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF), seized a large consignment of banned cough syrup worth over Rs 80 lakh from Agartala Railway Station. One person has been detained in connection with the case.

Police said the seizure was made late at night during a routine inspection of a parcel wagon attached to the Garib Rath Express, which had arrived at the station earlier in the day. Officials became suspicious after detecting an unusual smell emanating from the wagon, prompting a detailed search.

During the inspection, security personnel recovered 2,998 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup packed inside 10 jute bags. The estimated market value of the seized consignment is over Rs 80 lakh. According to preliminary information, the parcel reportedly originated from Kolkata.

The detained individual has been identified as Rakesh Hossain (44), a resident of Rajnagar under West Agartala Police Station. He told authorities that he is associated with a courier service and had come to receive the parcel.

Tripura Police stated that legal proceedings have been initiated and a thorough investigation is underway to trace the source and intended destination of the consignment, as well as to uncover any larger network involved in the alleged smuggling operation.
