Six undertrial prisoners, including a Bangladeshi national, escape from Tripura jail; one re-arrested

Six undertrial prisoners escaped from Dharmanagar Sub-Jail at Kalikapur under North district in the early hours of Wednesday, October 1.

Latest reports state that among the escapees, one, identified as Abdul Pata of Assam, has been re-arrested.

As per preliminary reports, the jailbreak occurred around 6 a.m. shortly after the inmates were released from their cells for routine morning activities such as work and breakfast.

According to official sources, the prisoners suddenly launched a violent attack on the jail security staff using improvised weapons and made their way out of the facility.

In the course of the scuffle, a jail official, identified as Bedu Mia, sustained injuries and was rushed to Dharmanagar District Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

The fugitives have been identified as Nazim Uddin, accused in multiple theft and property-related cases; Rahim Ali, facing charges under Sections 331 and 309 of the BNS; Sunil Debbarma, accused in a murder case under Sections 364, 302, and 201 of the IPC; Narayan Dutta, a Bangladeshi national charged under Section 03 of the PP Act; Rosan Ali, also accused under Sections 331 and 309 of the BNS; and Abdul Pata of Nilambazar, Assam, who faces charges under the NDPS Act in a drug-related case.

Sources said that the prisoners scaled the right wall of the jail compound, carefully avoiding the main gate where tighter security was deployed.

"A massive manhunt has been launched across the region, including in areas along the Assam-Tripura border and nearby locations close to the international boundary with Bangladesh. Authorities have stepped up security checks at transport hubs, highways, and sensitive points as efforts continue to track down the escapees", said a source.
