Tension in Tripura village after anti-Waqf Bill protestors attack security personnel

Tripura's Kubjhar village, located under the Kailashahar sub-division of Unakoti, witnessed a tense situation on April 12 after a group of protestors, who took out a rally protesting against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, allegedly attacked security personnel when stopped from moving forward.

Over a hundred minority Muslims took out a rally protesting the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and demanded its repeal at Kubjhar village of Kailashahar sub-division, a bordering village with Bangladesh.

The rally was reportedly led by Kailashahar District President MD Badrujaman.

Speaking on the matter, Rati Ranjan Debnath, DIG (Northern Range), told India Today NE that the rally, led by MD Badrujaman, was initially peaceful. He said that the protestors were not supposed to hold a rally and were expected to return after attending a meeting.

“All of a sudden, they took out a rally and started moving towards Kailashahar city. We had placed barricades to prevent them. After covering some distance, when the rally reached the Murar Dukan area, a group of youths had a face-off with the security forces and tried to push them back. They also attempted to damage the barricades. Later, all of a sudden, they started pelting stones at our security personnel. We tried to stop them and prevent them from carrying out such activities. However, many of our security personnel were injured, and we had to disperse the gathering,” he said.

The DIG added that the situation is now normal.

Meanwhile, sources from Tripura Police said that they have deployed huge security personnel across the Kailashahar sub-division to prevent any untoward incidents.

On the other hand, a similar rally by the minority Muslims was carried out at Sonamura sub-division under Sepahijala district today, April 12. Sepahijala district is a Muslim-dominated area.
