Three Bangladeshi nationals detained in Tripura while attempting to cross border
Tripura Police from Jatrapur Police Station under Sepahijala district detained three Bangladeshi nationals late on the night of February 15 on suspicion of illegal movement near the border while they were allegedly attempting to cross into Bangladesh.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sriti Kanta Bardhan said that acting on a tip-off at around 11:30 pm, police rushed to Thindeba Choumuhani in Nidaya.
“Local residents reportedly noticed the trio moving suspiciously in the area and detained them before informing the police. A police team led by myself, along with personnel from the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), reached the spot and took the three individuals into custody. During preliminary interrogation, they allegedly admitted that they had gone to various states in India, particularly Bengaluru, about four years ago in search of work. They were reportedly attempting to return home via Tripura when they were apprehended,” the OC said.
Police sources stated that the location where the trio was found is approximately 500 metres east of the barbed-wire fencing along the international border.
The detainees have been identified as Ataul Sheikh, Azizur Sheikh, and Swapna Sheikh, all residents of Narail district in Bangladesh.
OC Bardhan said they have been subjected to preliminary questioning and will be produced before a court with a prayer for remand.
