Tipra Motha demands ECI to launch special intensive revision in Tripura to curb illegal migration

A nine-member delegation of the Tipra Motha Party, led by its founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, met with the Election Commission of India (ECI) in New Delhi on Wednesday, demanding the immediate implementation of a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tripura to identify and remove illegal migrants from the voter list.

The delegation submitted a memorandum to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, stressing the urgent need for a revision similar to the one currently being carried out in Bihar. Addressing reporters after the meeting, Pradyot said, “If Bihar can have SIR, then why not Tripura? The scale of illegal migration in our state is alarming. If this continues, we indigenous people will soon have to beg for our own existence.”

Pradyot made it clear that the demand was not just political but a matter of safeguarding Tripura’s demography, identity, and future. He reiterated his party’s long-standing stand on the issue, calling for the detection, deletion, and deportation of illegal immigrants—especially those who have entered from neighbouring Bangladesh.

“We can’t give them a single inch of our land. The Election Commission must take action before it’s too late. If not now, when? The errors of the past—from the 1950s to the 1990s—cannot be repeated in 2025. We must act,” Pradyot asserted.

When asked about national parties like the Congress and BJP engaging separately with the ECI, the Tipra Motha chief said, “They can do whatever they want. We are an independent regional party, and we do not need permission from anyone to speak for our people. We are here to protect the interests of the indigenous communities of Tripura and the Northeast. If needed, we will approach the Supreme Court.”

Pradyot also revealed that the Election Commission responded positively to their demands and assured that the Special Intensive Revision process will be undertaken across India, including in Tripura. However, the party remains cautious and said it will closely monitor the execution of this assurance.

The development marks a significant step in Tipra Motha’s continued campaign to assert the rights of the indigenous people of Tripura, amid rising concerns over demographic imbalance and electoral distortions due to unchecked cross-border migration.
