Tripura: Agartala Smart City launches India's first data centre, fibre network
Agartala Smart City Limited has become the first Indian smart city to launch its own Data Centre and fibre network, setting a benchmark for other smart city projects nationwide. The state-of-the-art Data Centre was inaugurated on August 5 by Tripura Chief Secretary JK Sinha, Secretary of Urban Development Abhishek Singh, Dr Shailesh Kumar Yadav, Mission Director of Agartala Smart City Ltd, and Jeya Ragul Geshan, Director of Information and Technology.
Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav, who also serves as the Commissioner of Agartala Municipal Corporation, highlighted the significance of this development. "This new Data Centre, equipped with servers operating 24x7 and technology worth Rs 30 crore, marks a significant milestone for Agartala Smart City. Previously, our data was hosted in the DIT Data Centre, but due to various reasons, we decided to establish our facility," he explained.
The Data Centre is interconnected with all smart elements throughout the city, including CCTV cameras, traffic signals, LED display boards, and weather information displays, via a 156 km optical fibre cable network owned by Agartala Smart City. "This facility essentially serves as the brain of the entire network, operating 24x7," Yadav stated.
The Data Centre boasts a provision for storing all data, including CCTV footage, for 30 days by default. "If there is any incident, for example, if the police want to store any data for a longer period for investigation or other purposes, it can be stored for a longer time. We have a large data storage capacity, with 1 petabyte as primary and 1.9 petabytes as secondary storage. This state-of-the-art data centre in Agartala is the only Smart City in the country with its own data centre and optical fibre cable network. The data centre is scalable for future needs," Yadav added.
