Tripura BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee has been elected to the Rajya Sabha, securing 47 votes out of the 57 cast in the election held on September 3. Bhattacharjee now becomes the lone Member of Parliament representing Tripura in the upper house.
The voting for the state's sole Rajya Sabha seat took place from 9 am to 5 pm. Bhattacharjee, backed by BJP, IPFT, and Tipra Motha MLAs, expressed his gratitude after the win, thanking the legislators for their support. He also acknowledged the trust placed in him by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP National President JP Nadda.
"My primary aim will be the development of Tripura, and I will raise all development issues in Parliament. I will work closely with both state and central governments to address the challenges faced by the people," Bhattacharjee stated.
Earlier, Chief Minister Manik Saha had predicted Bhattacharjee’s victory, given the BJP’s strong presence in the assembly, holding 33 out of the 60 seats, along with support from alliance partner IPFT and Tipra Motha. The opposition CPIM, which has 10 seats, had fielded former MLA Sudhan Das as their candidate, while Congress holds three seats in the assembly.
