Tripura BJP protests in front of Bangladesh envoy’s office over vandalism of Tagore’s ancestral home

The Tripura unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday held a protest demonstration outside the office of the Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Agartala, condemning the recent vandalism of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral house in Bangladesh.

Led by Tripura BJP President and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharya, over 200 BJP workers marched from the North Gate of Agartala city to the Bangladesh mission, raising slogans and denouncing what they termed a “cruel act” against a global literary icon.

Speaking to the media, Bhattacharya expressed outrage at the incident, calling it a reflection of the deteriorating law and order situation in Bangladesh, especially under its current interim government.

“Since the formation of the interim government in Bangladesh, minorities—especially Hindus—have faced increasing threats. Temples have been attacked, priests assaulted, and now even the ancestral home of Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore has not been spared. What kind of governance is this? Is it a democracy or the emergence of a dictatorship?” he questioned.

Bhattacharya also sharply criticized the Mohammad Yunus-led interim government for its silence and inaction following the attack. “There has been no statement, no arrests. It is deeply disturbing. India cannot accept this insult to Tagore and to cultural heritage. Our protest is a strong message of condemnation,” he said.

Tripura shares an 856-kilometre international border with Bangladesh, and cultural ties between the two regions remain strong. The vandalism of Tagore’s ancestral home has drawn wide criticism across India and added to concerns over rising religious and cultural intolerance in the neighbouring country.
