Tripura CM demands strictest punishment for accused in Anjel Chakma murder case, urges no politics over death

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on December 30 demanded the strictest possible punishment for those involved in the brutal murder of Tripura student Anjel Chakma in Uttarakhand.
Urging people not to politicise the tragic incident, the Chief Minister assured that justice would be delivered.

Saha informed that financial assistance provided by both the Tripura and Uttarakhand governments has been handed over to the family of the deceased, while stressing that no amount of money can compensate for the loss of a life.

“Immediately after receiving the news of Anjel Chakma’s tragic death, I spoke to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. I spoke to him again yesterday. The Uttarakhand government announced financial assistance for the bereaved family, and the Tripura government has also decided to provide Rs 5 lakh as support,” he said.

He added that Tripura’s Minister for Social Welfare and Social Education, Tinku Roy, and Minister for Industries and Commerce, Santana Chakma, visited the residence of the deceased student and handed over the cheques issued by both state governments to the family members.

Saha said a delegation of the Chakma Students’ Organisation met him last week, and he listened carefully to their concerns.
“The state government always acts promptly in times of crisis. Earlier, around 350 students were stranded in Manipur, and we brought them back safely. In difficult times, the government stands by its people. Everyone is present during happy moments, but it is during times of grief that true support matters most,” he said.

Expressing deep condolences, the Chief Minister prayed for the peace of the departed soul.
So far, police have arrested five accused in connection with the murder, Saha said, adding that efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining absconding accused.

“All those responsible will be brought to justice. I want the strictest punishment for the accused in this heinous crime,” he asserted.
Saha also stated that the family is aware that the Tripura government, Uttarakhand government and the central government are closely monitoring the case.

“I appeal to everyone not to do politics over such a painful incident. No one should ever politicise a dead body. This is the time to stand with the family, share their grief, and pray for the peace of the departed soul. This is an extremely tragic incident,” he said.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament from Tripura East, Kriti Devi Debbarman, has written to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, expressing deep anguish over the brutal attack and subsequent death of Anjel Chakma in Dehradun.

In her letter, the MP stated that Anjel Chakma was violently attacked on December 9 and later succumbed to his injuries, describing the incident as “deeply distressing” and a matter of serious concern for students and families from Tripura and other North-Eastern states residing in Uttarakhand.

Debbarman said her office remained in touch with the Uttarakhand government immediately after the incident and was assured that an FIR had been registered and necessary action initiated. However, she expressed concern over reports suggesting that the main accused is still absconding.

Urging swift and decisive action, the MP appealed to the chief minister to personally intervene to ensure the immediate arrest of the absconding accused and to bring all those involved to justice with strict and exemplary punishment.

She also stressed the need for concrete measures to ensure the safety and security of students from Tripura and across the North-East who travel to Uttarakhand for education and employment, noting that the incident has shaken the confidence of many families.

“It is imperative that the state administration sends out a strong message that violence, discrimination and brutality will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” Debbarman wrote.

Expressing faith in the Uttarakhand government, the MP said she looks forward to timely action and assured cooperation to ensure justice for the victim and reassurance for the affected student community.
