Tripura intelligence chief reviews Kailashahar security after violent Waqf protest

A day after unrest erupted in the Kailashahar subdivision, in Tripura's Unakoti district, Director General (Intelligence) Anurag Dhankar visited the area and held a meeting with police personnel.

Tension gripped Kailashahar following a scuffle between police and demonstrators on Saturday, April 12, in Kubjhar village, after security personnel stopped a protest rally demanding the withdrawal of the Waqf Amendment Bill. Following the confrontation, protestors reportedly pelted stones and bricks at the security personnel, who in turn used force to disperse the mob.

As a result, both police personnel and protestors sustained injuries.

Subsequently, Tripura Police arrested eight individuals in connection with the incident.

In the aftermath, heavy security deployment has been ensured across Kailashahar to prevent any further unrest.

DG (Intelligence) Anurag Dhankar arrived in Kailashahar from Agartala on Sunday evening and proceeded directly to the Kailashahar Police Station.

A high-level review meeting was convened in the chamber of the Officer-in-Charge from 4 PM to 6:30 PM. The meeting was attended by DIG (Northern Range) Rati Ranjan Debnath, Unakoti SP Sudhambika R, and other senior officials.

While DG Dhankar refrained from speaking to the media, DIG Debnath informed reporters that the overall situation in Kailashahar and across Unakoti district has remained peaceful since the incident.

“No further untoward incidents have been reported. People in this district are peace-loving and prefer harmony,” he said.

He added that the DG’s visit was part of a routine review, especially ahead of festivities like Chaitra Sankranti and Poila Boishakh, which draw large gatherings and necessitate heightened security measures.

Police sources revealed that during the meeting, DG Dhankar sought a detailed report on the April 12 incident from SP Sudhambika R.

He also inquired about the condition of the injured police personnel and directed that they receive proper medical care.
