Tripura man killed over witchcraft suspicion; two arrested in connection

Tripura Police have identified and arrested two persons involved in the brutal assault of a 58-year-old man, Jaban Bhakta Jamatia, on Tuesday 25 November in the Kupilong area under Killa Police Station of Tripura’s Gomati District. The victim, who had been accused of practising witchcraft and black magic, died on Thursday.

Gomati District Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar visited the residence of the victim today.
According to the SP, the victim was forcibly dragged out of his home around midnight on 25 November.

“He was allegedly beaten with rods and bamboo sticks by several villagers. Police rushed to the spot upon receiving information and immediately shifted him to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, Jamatia succumbed to his injuries on 26 November,” he said.

The SP, who visited the spot along with Udaipur Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Debanjali Roy, said that authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the incident.

Police confirmed that two persons—Chandra Kumar Jamatia (58) and Kamala Devi Jamatia (48)—have been arrested in connection with the assault.

“Some other accused persons have already been identified, and strict action will be taken against everyone involved. More arrests will follow soon,” police said.
